The International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA) proudly claims its status as the true "Global Authority of Security Police Unions," serving as a prominent labor union for security professionals.
Our legacy of elite protection commenced on February 17, 1948, with our initial certification as the United Plant Guard Workers of America (UPGWA). For generations, we have acted as a protective shield for the industrial workforce. In May 2000, our delegates voted to rebrand as SPFPA—a change that accurately reflected the growing diversity, specialization, and professionalism of the industries we serve. Today, we proudly stand as the world’s largest independent labor union solely focused on the representation of security personnel.
Who We Stand For
In accordance with federal law (Section 9(b)(3) of the National Labor Relations Act), which mandates independent representation for security professionals, the SPFPA addresses this crucial need. We do not merely represent guards; we are dedicated to the specialized forces that safeguard our global infrastructure.
SPFPA members provide frontline defense across a wide range of critical sectors:
- National & Corporate Security: Aerospace, Military Installations, Homeland Security facilities, and the Department of Defense/NASA.
- Energy & Tech: U.S. Department of Energy locations, Nuclear Facilities, and Public Utilities.
- Infrastructure & Logistics: Transit networks, Airports, Seaports, and the Automotive industry.
- Public Safety & Institutions: Federal Courts, Universities, Hospitals, Prisons, Detention Centers, and Correctional Facilities.
- Commercial Entertainment: High-stakes environments like Casinos, Armored Cars, and major Entertainment venues.
Driven by Progress, Prepared for the Future
Our history of growth—marked by significant expansions that organized the first casino security forces in Las Vegas and the dedicated teams protecting renowned global destinations like Disneyland and Walt Disney World—has demonstrated that our strength resides in solidarity.
Guided by our unwavering motto of "One Union, One Strong Voice," the International Union continually safeguards and promotes the interests of our members through robust collective bargaining, proactive legislation, and steadfast litigation. As a diverse and highly disciplined union, SPFPA is well-equipped to face the unique challenges of the emerging century, ensuring that every member receives the security, rights, and respect they deserve on the job.
